SUMMARY:County-Wide Common Milkweed Seed Pod Collection
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for joining the county-wide Milkweed Seed Pod Collection. Drop your Common Milkweed Seed Pods off at the Richland SWCD office\, 1495 W. Longview Avenue\, Suite 205B\, Mansfield in the green and yellow bin located outside the office door. \n\n\n\nHere are a few guidelines for this year’s collection: \n\n\n\nWe are collecting only Common Milkweed Seed pods because of the instability of other species.  If you are unsure of the species\, do not put them in the bin. Do not drop off pods that are damp or wet because it can cause mold and damage all the pods collected. \n\n\n\nThe amount of Common Milkweed Seed pods collected will be capped at 30 gallons due to the time required to remove the seeds from the pods. If the 30 gallon amount is reached\, the bin will be removed and we will no longer be able to accept anymore pods.  \n\n\n\nInside the bin\, will be a large paper bag.  Do not keep your pods in the bag you used to bring them to the drop off location. Instead\, please add all common milkweed seed pods collectively in the large paper bag.   Please do not rubber band pods together.  They can damage the equipment used to remove the seeds from the pods and we will be held liable.  \n\n\n\nThank you for helping with this year’s milkweed seed pod collection and helping the monarch butterfly! \n\n\n\nMore information about the collection may be found here: Programs | Richland Soil & Water (richlandswcd.net)

SUMMARY:Invasive Species on Land and Water to Know and How to Control
DESCRIPTION:Beat the cold of winter with thoughts of spring warmth and learning about invasive plants! Join Richland Soil and Water Conservation District and our guest speakers for this workshop on invasive species that are found in bodies of water and on land. Snacks will be provided. \n\n\n\nLearn about aquatic invasive plants in backyard ponds and natural areas in Ohio from Mark Warman. Several water weed species are on the move and threaten our recreation\, ecosystem\, and economic interests. Identification\, notes from the field\, and response strategies are discussed. Notable and rare aquatic plant discoveries in Ohio from the past 5 years will conclude his presentation. \n\n\n\nWhat is a weed and what makes a weed an INVASIVE weed? Janell Baran will teach you how to identify and understand several of Ohio’s most common plant invasives and then explore alternative — and sometimes unexpected — ways to combat them without the use of herbicides. \n\n\n\nAbout the speakers: \n\n\n\nMark’s job with the Cleveland Metroparks involves working on an aquatic invasive plant Early Detection and Rapid Response project in Ohio’s Lake Erie Basin. His responsibilities are to survey macrophytes\, assist with management strategies\, and coordinate partners to protect Ohio’s water resources. Funding comes from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service via the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Program.  \n\n\n\nJanell Baran is the owner and operator of Blue Owl Garden Emporium herb farm and Blue Owl Hollow forest farm. After spending 20 years in the computer industry\, a series of events inspired her to leave that life and become a farmer full-time in 2006. She now lives a busy\, dirty\, physically exhausting\, but very satisfying life on an old mid-1800s farmstead nestled in the hills and hollows of central Ohio. \n\n\n\nWhen you register for Invasive Species on Land and Water to Know and How to Control you are agreeing to receive information from Richland Soil and Water Conservation District (Richland SWCD) like the quarterly e-newsletter. Richland SWCD reserves the right to take photos during the Invasive Species on Land and Water to Know and How to Control for promotional purposes. Photography becomes the property of Richland SWCD.

SUMMARY:Continental Divide Selfie Contest
DESCRIPTION:While driving around Richland County\, have you noticed new green and white signs that state “Continental Divide” and has our logo at the top? The signs are part of an initiative to create more awareness of the Continental Divide and watersheds in Richland County. In the spirit of continuing to foster partnerships\, the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD) gave us a grant to have road signs printed showing when you enter and leave the Lake Erie and Ohio River Watersheds. Richland County Engineer Adam Gove and his staff placed the signs at designated spots along the Divide line. \n\n\n\nTo have some fun with the signs and increase awareness about the Divide and Richland County watersheds\, we created a contest. All you need to do is take a selfie with your smartphone at a sign\, post it to social media noting the sign location and #richlandcontinentaldivide. Don’t have a smart phone? No problem! Reach us at Contact@richlandswcd.net. \n\n\n\nWhat’s a contest without a prize?! If you follow the guidelines above\, you’ll receive a free pair of eclipse glasses so you are prepared for the Total Solar Eclipse slated for April 8. One entry per person. Glasses are available while supplies last and may be picked up at our office. \n\n\n\nVisit Drive the Continental Divide web page for hints to help with the contest and to learn more about Richland County watersheds and the Continental Divide.
