SUMMARY:County-wide Milkweed Seed Pod Collection
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for joining the county-wide Milkweed Seed Pod Collection. Drop your Common Milkweed Seed Pods off at the Richland SWCD office\, 1495 W. Longview Avenue\, Suite 205B\, Mansfield in the green and yellow bin located outside the office door. \n\n\n\nHere are a few guidelines for this year’s collection: \n\n\n\nWe are collecting only Common Milkweed Seed pods because of the instability of other species.  If you are unsure of the species\, do not put them in the bin. \n\n\n\nDo not drop off pods that are damp because it can cause mold and damage all the pods collected. \n\n\n\nThe amount of Common Milkweed Seed pods collected will be capped at 30 gallons due to the time required to remove the seeds from the pods. \n\n\n\nIf the 30 gallon amount is reached\, the bin will be removed and we will no longer be able to accept anymore pods.  \n\n\n\nInside the bin\, will be a large paper bag.  Do not keep your pods in the bag you used to bring them to the drop off location. Instead\, please add all common milkweed seed pods collectively in the large paper bag.    \n\n\n\nPlease do not rubber band pods together.  They can damage the equipment used to remove the seeds from the pods and we will be held liable.  \n\n\n\nThank you for helping with this year’s milkweed seed pod collection and helping the monarch butterfly! \n\n\n\nMore information about the collection may be found here: Programs | Richland Soil & Water (richlandswcd.net)

SUMMARY:Volunteer of the Year Tree Planting
DESCRIPTION:Please join us as we plant a black gum tree in honor of Robert Donaldson\, our Volunteer of the Year\, at Patriot Park in Lexington. Robert begin volunteering with Richland Soil and Water Conservation District in 2023. It is unusual for such a new volunteer to be named Volunteer of the Year\, but Robert has been such a help to the district in such a short time\, he is a natural choice. Robert serves the district as a precipitation monitor and provides daily reports of rain and snow amounts on the  Richland Soil and Water Conservation District website. He has helped in other numerous ways with creating and updating many Excel workbooks to provide us with accurate and up-to-date information. He also developed a Precipitation Monitor training power point. Robert said he volunteers with Richland Soil and Water Conservation District because it is a natural extension of his current work with CoCoRaHS (Community Collaborative Rain\, Hail and Snow Network). He spent many years as a manager and consultant doing process improvement projects\, many of which included extensive excel spread sheets and PowerPoint presentations and he thought he might be able to help with our process. \n\n\n\nRobert has volunteered with SCORE for 22 years. SCORE provides free mentoring to individuals who want to start a small business and to small businesses owners. He has served as a mentor\, technology chair and as chapter chair. He has volunteered with COCoRaHS since March 2023 making daily precipitation reports\, frost reports and weekly condition reports and volunteers at the Ohio Bird Sanctuary. \n\n\n\nRobert is retired and a father of three children. Thank you\, Robert\, for volunteering with the district! Congratulations on being named the 2024 Volunteer of the Year!

SUMMARY:MWCD Cover Crop Cost Share Applications Due
DESCRIPTION:Richland Soil and Water Conservation District (Richland SWCD) is partnering with the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD) on the cost share program for producers who plant cover crops. \n\n\n\nIn 2023\, the MWCD cover crop cost share program assisted in getting cover crops planted on 140.73 acres of Richland County farmland. The benefits of planting cover crops include preventing and reducing erosion\, improving soil health\, increased crop productivity\, and farm profitability. \n\n\n\nApplications are due by July 9\, 2024. \n\n\n\nItems of Importance: \n\n\n\n\nThe 2024 MWCD Cover Crop program cost share is $12.00 per acre.\n\n\n\nThe general cap is 200 acres per participant unless cover crops are planted in the Charles Mill or Pleasant Hill Lake watersheds.\n\n\n\nThe 200-acre cap applies across multiple counties if the landowner is signing up in multiple counties.\n\n\n\nThis program cannot be enrolled in another program to receive funding for the same cover crop such as the United States Department of Agriculture-Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS) Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) or H2Ohio.\n\n\n\nThere are no exceptions to the United States Department of Agriculture-Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS) seedling dates and rates. If a mix is going to be planted\, the earliest seeding date of the species within the mix is the date that it must be planted by such as radishes.\n\n\n\nWheat is allowed and can be harvested.\n\n\n\n\n2024 Cover Crop Application \n\n\n\nMWCD Assessment Area \n\n\n\nTo get more information contact Matt Wallace by phone at 419.747.8687 or email.
