General description of each species:

Bluegill

Redear Bluegill
Feeder Fish. These fish can reach 10-12 inches and weight 1-1.5 pounds. They also eat a lot of snails, which often helps keep parasites away from other fish. Both male and female Redear Bluegill have red ears, but coloring is much larger and a deeper red among males.
Fathead Minnows

White Amur
Popular fish for vegetation control in farm ponds, namely algae and grass along the banks. They can grow to sizes ranging from 40-100 pounds.

How to Determine the Size of Your Pond

Stocking recommendations are based on one acre increments. To assist in sizing your pond there are several android and apple apps that can be downloaded onto smartphones, or desktops. Search for wording ie: gps area, land area calculator, field area, etc. Once you outline your pond or lake, divide by 43,560 to find acreage.

How to Provide a Safe Haven for Fish

Fish like to have a roof over their heads so artificial objects like cement blocks, clay tile and weighted wood pallets provide a hotel setting and nesting sites. Sunken tree limbs also add to the natural setting for fish to live in.
